Overwhelmed when you walk up to the MAC counter? Yep, I bet! Don’t worry…you are not alone. MAC has soooo many options and that’s AMAZING! The downside is that for customers who are new to the brand, or even new to makeup in general, deciding where the heck to start can be an intimidating task.
I’m here to help! I have been using MAC products since I was sixteen and even had the pleasure to work for them for a few years as an artist. They are one of my favorite brands, and I think everyone can find products they will love from MAC.
There are a ton of blogs and videos out there talking about the creator’s favorite “must try” MAC products, and I always enjoy seeing what others love from the company. I decided I would write my own list. Hopefully, it helps ya’ll have a fun shopping experience at MAC and find some of your new go tos. I narrowed my list down to five…you heard me only FIVE of my favorite products, so hard! So here we go!
Studio Fix Powder
If someone told me I could only buy one product from MAC for the rest of my life, it would be Studio Fix Powder. It’s just the best and it always will be!
I have tried so many other powders that are comparable but they are never quite as good as Studio Fix. The main reason I love it is because it’s a matte foundation powder, not a setting powder. Which basically means it has great coverage!
I use it often on top of liquid foundation (just a light dusting!) to get an extremely full coverage look. Your skin will look FLAWLESS if you use that tip! Another way I use it is as my only layer of foundation (it’s intended use lol!) and I still can achieve a full coverage look. Especially when I layer it up a few times with a buffer brush like this.
When I was working at MAC, the one complaint I would hear about this powder is that it got “cakey”. My tip to avoid this…DON’T LAYER IT UP OVER AND OVER THROUGHOUT THE DAY. Would you layer a liquid foundation on your face multiple times during the day? NO! So think of this product in the same way, since it is technically after all…a foundation.
Lipstick
MAC lipsticks are soooo gooooood. First of all, they smell like cake lol! I’m just going to talk about the classic line that comes in the black bullet packaging, but they have so many more options now!
In the classic line, they have seven different finishes ranging from a super matte finish (retro matte) to the shiniest finish (lustre) and varieties in between. My favorite finish is called “satin” and it’s the perfect mix MAC describes as “a creamy medium buildable coverage”. Plus they have over 150 shades! I could seriously make an entire YouTube video about all the colors you should check out…maybe I will! But for now, I’ll just share a few of my personal favorites.
The BEST nude, in my opinion, is “Viva Glam II”. It’s a cooler toned nude and I swear it looks great with EVERY skin tone. My favorite red is hands down “Ruby Woo” because it’s bright and fun and makes me feel like an old Hollywood movie star! The cool undertone makes your teeth look nice and white too! Definitely a plus. For a nice pink, “Faux” is probably my favorite. I wore it on my wedding day because it’s almost like a nude, but with the perfect amount of pink mixed in. Plus it’s a satin finish, my fav! I could seriously go on forever so I’ll stop there, and make a video soon!
Pigment
Now, so many brands have a version of loose powder eyeshadow. Back when I first started using MAC, they were pretty much the only ones doing it (besides Bare Minerals I think!) so it really stood out to me.
MAC Pigment, just like many other makeup products, is actually multifunctional. It’s not just used as eyeshadow even though many customers think so. One of my favorite ways is to use it as a highlight. Girl…..throw some “Vanilla” pigment on your cheekbones and try not to have an amazing day lol! As a bridal makeup artist, I can’t tell you how often I use “Vanilla” and “Tan” pigment on the lid. Those are my two go tos because they are neutral and reflect light so beautifully. If you try just one color, try “Tan”. It is stunning on EVERY SKIN TONE.
*Pro-tip: Wet your brush with Fix+ from MAC while using pigments to get even better color payoff, more shine, and a longer-lasting eye look.
Prep + Prime Fix+
I have to let you in on the secrets of Fix+. MAC describes Fix+ as “a lightweight water mist that gently soothes and refreshes the skin, and finishes makeup”. So yes, it definitely does all of that…and SOOO much more.
My favorite way to use Fix+ is with pigment, like I mentioned above because it has glycerin in it. Because glycerin attracts moisture, it helps pack more pigment on your lid when you wet your brush resulting in denser more long-lasting color. It also gives it so much SHINE! So gorgeous.
You can also mix things into Fix+. You heard me right, mix pigments, highlights, glitter, etc. into the Fix + bottle and BOOM!…you just created a body glow spray. MAC recently came out with different scents of Fix+ so you can shop them, or create your own by adding a few drops of essential oils.
Eyeshadow X9 Palettes
X9 palettes are great! They are as suggested, a shadow palette with nine different shades of eyeshadow. Each palette has a variety of finishes, and the colors are cohesive. The actual size of each shadow is fairly small, about the size of a dime. But with the compared cost of larger single color eyeshadow from MAC, these babies are a great bang for your buck!
Because the nine shades are designed to be mixed and matched together, creating different looks with them is so easy. They have several different permanent palettes in the line but also add fun limited-edition versions that launch in different collections from time to time.
My personal favorite is called “Dusky Rose”. It’s a collection of pinky taupe goodness…so pretty!
I hope this list inspired you and please comment below what your favorite MAC product is!
